i have allergies and my nasal passage is swollen, i tend to sniff, have runny nose, and cannot smell... one of my nostrils always gets swollen, there rarely was any time that i was able to breathe comfortably. I have went to a few doctors and they gave me different advice... one said to get laser surgery, other said eat healthy and they put ginseng water up my nose, and the last said i had a lot of heat in my body that caused my nasal passage to swell up and stuck needles all over my face(acupuncture). i have had this problem for 5 years now... is there any way to treat my nasal passage at home without using money? surgery is not an option right now... my major is culinary but without a sense of smell I won't be getting anywhere... please help!! thank you
Home remedy: Try salt water nasal spray. If you don’t want to buy saline spray at the store (about $2.99), you can mix the salt water yourself and put it in a bottle to spray up your nostrils. It will help to clear your nose, but it won’t necessarily make the swelling go down.
You can also buy a neti pot ($10-$12), which is good because it comes with refillable packets and also uses salt water that you put up your nostrils to help clear out your congestion. It’s more of a wash than a spray.
I know you said without money but… The option that I would recommend is going to a doctor or nurse practitioner and requesting a Steroid nasal spray (like Flonase). They have these in generic form now, so they’re cheaper and they really work for people. It’s amazing how much they help with swelling and they’re a whole lot cheaper than accupuncture, even if you don’t have insurance. Sometimes you can call your doctor and get them to call you a prescription into the pharmacy since you’ve already seen them about this problem so you don’t have to pay for another visit. Call the one who suggested surgery(!!!!).
Also, do NOT use any sprays that come over-the-counter like Afrin (contains oxymetazoline), since that can actually make your congestion worse after you use it for a few days.
Good luck with your symptoms and culinary school.
